Area = Length × Width

To find area multiply unit x unit, which squared unit (unit2)

A square that is 1 meter on each side
is 1 square meter.

Square Meter

The square meter is the basic unit of area of the Metric System.
Area of a rectangle is length by length or length by width so:

	The unit is meters × meters, which is written m2 (square meters).

	Rectangle Area = w × h w = width h = height			Square Area = a2 a = length of side
	Triangle (right angle) Area = ½ × b × h b = base h = vertical height			Parallelogram Area = b × h b = base h = vertical height
	Trapezoid Area = ½(a+b) × h h = vertical height			Circle Area = π × r2 Circumference = 2 × π × r r = radius

Area of Rectangls and Squares

Example: What is the area of this rectangle?

Example: How big is this rectangle measured in meters?

It is 6 meters by 3 meters, so it is 6m × 3 m = 18 m2
Note. There are 18 squared units in the 6 by 3 rectangle.

Example: What are the areas of these two squares?

1 you can count the amount of squared units in the squares which is 64 and 9 respectively
2. Multiply Length by Width 8x8=64squared units and 3x3=9 squared units
